Background of the Study

Timely access to skilled birth attendants during childbirth is essential for preventing maternal and neonatal complications. Delays in accessing skilled care, particularly in rural areas, can lead to adverse health outcomes for both mothers and their infants. In Nasarawa State, factors such as poor road infrastructure, lack of transportation, and inadequate healthcare facilities contribute to delays in seeking skilled birth attendants. These delays are among the major causes of maternal mortality, especially in resource-limited settings (Kanu et al., 2024). This study will appraise the factors contributing to delays in accessing skilled birth attendants in Nasarawa State and explore their impact on maternal health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to improve maternal healthcare in Nasarawa State, delays in accessing skilled birth attendants persist as a major challenge. Pregnant women often face multiple barriers to reaching healthcare facilities in a timely manner, including long distances to the nearest health centers, inadequate transportation, and cultural beliefs favoring home deliveries. These delays may result in untreated obstetric complications, contributing to preventable maternal deaths. Evaluating the factors that cause delays in accessing skilled birth attendants is essential for improving maternal health interventions in the state.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the factors causing delays in accessing skilled birth attendants in Nasarawa State.

2. To examine the impact of delays in accessing skilled birth attendants on maternal health outcomes in Nasarawa State.

3. To identify strategies to reduce delays in accessing skilled birth attendants and improve maternal health in Nasarawa State.

Research Questions

1. What are the factors contributing to delays in accessing skilled birth attendants in Nasarawa State?

2. How do delays in accessing skilled birth attendants affect maternal health outcomes in Nasarawa State?

3. What strategies can reduce delays in accessing skilled birth attendants and improve maternal health in Nasarawa State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Long distances to healthcare facilities significantly contribute to delays in accessing skilled birth attendants in Nasarawa State.

2. Delays in accessing skilled birth attendants are associated with poorer maternal health outcomes in Nasarawa State.

3. Improved transportation and healthcare infrastructure will reduce delays in accessing skilled birth attendants and improve maternal health in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on rural and urban areas in Nasarawa State, examining the factors that contribute to delays in accessing skilled birth attendants. Limitations may include variations in healthcare access and infrastructure across different regions of the state.

Definitions of Terms

• Skilled Birth Attendant: A trained healthcare professional, such as a doctor or midwife, who is capable of managing labor, delivery, and complications.

• Delay in Accessing Skilled Birth Attendant: A delay in seeking or receiving care from a skilled birth attendant during childbirth, often due to logistical, economic, or cultural barriers.
